Story

This barge, tank was built in 1960 by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp. in Decatur.

Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 15/10/2023) states "the J.M. HIDALGO was towing the tank barge TORI J (919254) and undoubtedly heading for Los Angeles. As mentioned before, San Diego has no commercial fuel piers except for small craft, so to bunker merchant ships, the fuel has to be loaded in Los Angeles and towed to San Diego. The primary provider of this service is Jankovich, who owns the TORI J.

They have a number of barges but just two vessels that serve as tugs for providing bunkers in the LA/LB Harbor area as well as San Diego, so when things get busy, they have to charter tugs to help out. TORI J came to Jankovich second-hand, and had been built in 1960 by Ingalls Decatur as the FOSS 208."
