Tripoli (U.S.S.)

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 07/12/2021) stated "USS TRIPOLI (LHA 7), the second of the LHA 6 class and also built without a well deck for landing craft. If the LHA's were a follow-on to the LPH's, with a change of mission because of carrying landing craft, then shouldn't the LHA 6 class be LPH's? But I've heard vague references to the fact that LHA and LHD, with the same mission, have different designations for "political reasons," maybe a line of seniority or something. I hope we don't continue the pattern of making a different designation for the same type of ship just because there's a new design that comes out. TRIPOLI was commissioned a year before this shot, and came to San Diego that September."
