Story

This schooner, four-masted was built in 1927 by Ansaldo S.A. in Livorno.

Historical Notes

Originally ordered for the Italian navy but before completion was purchased by the Duke of Westminster, who finished her as a yacht (launched in 1927). The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest states "she arrived at Puget Sound in April and underwent repairs and refit at Todd Seattle drydock. At the outbreak of war this vessel was laid up in Portage Bay, Lake Union. This vessel had tall masts and painted gunports." At the end of the war this vessel was stranded in Portage Bay for 14 years, barred by King County from sailing pending the payment of back taxes. On 27 October 1998 this vessel sank during Hurricane Mitch off the coast of Yucatan.
