One writer has called this the "Shamrock Fleet". The funnels of the MacFarlane brothers’s vessels were painted black and decorated with a white band on which was appended a green shamrock. The funnel of the Daring was left entirely black. The MacFarlane brothers were Captain Fred MacFarlane, Arthur MacFarlane (Chief Engineer), and Captain George A. MacFarlane.
