George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 27/04/2023) stated "For such a quiet port (considering the Navy takes care of their own) San Diego has a resplendent fleet. Besides other maintenance boats, there are 10 patrol boats, which admittedly spent most of their time pierside. Four (MARINE 6-9) are Safe Boats built with DHS funds. But 5 (MARINE 1-5) are of a MetalCraft (Canada) design called the Firestorm, first marketed in 2002. A couple dozen had been built when San Diego ordered this record number of them in a single contract. Since then there have been a couple hundred delivered all over the world. Typically water monitors and small boats don't work well together, but MetalCraft seems to have engineered the best compromise found so far. This is a photo of MARINE 3, which has no other name, and apparently no registration of any kind. So far I've never seen one of them up close enough to get an HIN on them."
