Story

This tug was built in 1944 by Northeast Shipbuilding Co. in Quincy, MA.

Historical Notes

In 1959 the U.S. Marshall seized the holdings of the Alaska Freight LIne and sold the tugs. THe company re-organized and re-purchased the vessels soon afterwards. George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 30/09/2022) stated "GALENE (269629) was built for the Army in WWII to design 293, which duplicated the pre-war tug MIKIMIKI. Of the 61 units built, very few remain. Even compared to other WWII vessels, their wooden hulls put them at a disadvantage. This one was built as LT 464 by Northeast Shipbuilding in Quincy MA in 1944. This vessel was documented about 1955 as RICHARD for Alaska Freight Lines. This vessel later also served as POLAR SEA before becoming the houseboat GALINI and now GALENE."
