Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 07/12/2021) stated ". This vessel was heading for the BAE Systems Shipyard in National City (formerly Continental Maritime, ex Southwest Marine, ex San Diego Marine). I’m sure I’ve heard an intended name for her, but it’s not on her, and I can’t find it now in any press releases. This vessel was being towed in from where this vessel was built in China. Something seems inherently wrong in a defense contractor gearing up for contracts to drydock some of our most powerful warships by having a drydock built in the country of a potential military enemy. I suppose, in this era of miniaturization of electronics, an enemy can put spy gear any place they want to and not get noticed, but this seems like begging for trouble. The drydock will be 950 ft long and 200 ft wide, capable of drydocking an LHD, so basically any kind of Navy ship except a CVN. As delivered, she’s 580 ft long, with the remaining sections riding inside the existing hull, to be floated out and welded in place once she’s moored."
