Notes historiques

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 27/11/2023) states "The morning after arriving I was delighted to see the PACIFIC COLLECTOR (IMO 7738474) tied up adjacent to us. This vessel now works for the Missile Defense Agency, but has an unpredictable career. This vessel was originally the Navy survey ship USNS CHAUVENET (T-AGS 29) but was one of a number of ships obtained overseas during a period when Great Britain was having difficulty paying off its war debt, and this somehow eased the problem. This vessel operated for 20 years in that capacity, then was loaned to the Texas Maritime Academy and named TEXAS CLIPPER II. This vessel and her sister were unpopular as maritime training ships because of their troublesome, foreign, obsolescent engines and didn't last 10 years in that role. But instead of heading for reserve or scrap, this vessel was quickly picked up by the MDA, re-engined, and appears to be in excellent condition nearly 20 years later."
