Wikedpedia states that "The vessel was approved for 'unrestricted ocean operations' and designed to withstand extremely harsh conditions at sea, including 100-knot (190 km/h) winds and 110-foot (34 m) waves. Prior to moving to the Grand Banks area in November 1980, it had operated off the coasts of Alaska, New Jersey and Ireland." It was floating on two 122-metre (400 ft) long pontoons that rested 24 metres (79 ft) below the surface. Daniel Riley (British Columbia Nautical History Facebook Group 25/03/2017) states "the Sedco Oil Rig came into Alberni I believe in the early 70,s , What I can confirm with absolute certainty is that the oil rig Odeco,s " Ocean Ranger" came into town in the winter of 1979 and was here for approximately 4 months . My father Doug Riley leased a small work boat named " Joe Boy" and he ran personnel and supplies from shoreside out to the rig. when I graduated from high school, I ran the boat up until the departure of the Ocean Ranger. I was fortunate to go up and have lunch on the rig daily . During my time on board , its sad to say , I met and became friends with a number of rig personnel , that were on board that fateful evening when the rig perished on the east coast of Canada. The Ocean Ranger was a very impressive sight while anchored in Port Alberni harbour . One last note , The rig was labeled "The Unsinkable Rig" because of its dimensions , ballast control, its ability to manoeuvre under its own power , etc.. , Now a part of History."
