Sea Gull (IV)

Geschichte

Historische Notizen

In 1941 this vessel was seized by the Custodian of Enemy Property (Frank Shears), Ottawa ON Canada.

In 1942 her ownership was transferred to His Majesty the King (Japanese Fishboat Disposal Committee). This vessel was seized at the start of the Second World War from her owners and offered for sale by the Japanese Fishboat Disposal Committee for $850. Claudia Lake (Email to Nauticapedia 01/05/2018) states that "The other vessel that Cameron Humphreys owned was the MV Sea Gull, a 29' (loa) double ended Japanese gillnetter, built in 1935/6, seized at the start of the Second World War, and sold for just over $850 dollars (see your data-base).

In 1972, Cameron Humphreys bought the boat, located at the time in Steveston and then known as the Joriann(e?), from a Mr. Tamboline. The Joriann had an A license, and Cameron used the boat as a commercial salmon troller for about three years in the waters off the southern Gulf Islands and then around the Discovery Islands.

From 1976 to 1979, Cameron rebuilt the boat completely at his home on Maurelle Island and used her as his main transportation up until this vessel was sold in 1998. This vessel remained the Joriann(e?) throughout our ownership … Cameron sold her in 1998 to a fellow called Randy McQuarry of Heriot Bay. This vessel was then sold to a guy called Vic ? in Heriot Bay, then to Paul Puddy of Quadra Island (who re-named her but I cannot recall to what), and finally to Robert Critchley of Sayward area, who has a fabulous "museum" of old west coast fishing boats and cannery related stuff; there the old MV Sea Gull (a.k.a. Joriann) rests, on dry land forever more, last seen in the middle of a "museum" restoration. This vessel was a lovely boat and I wish we had her now."
