Notes historiques

In 1903 this vessel was registered in Victoria BC Canada. This vessel was sailing inbound from Honolulu to Puget Sound for a cargo of lumber under Captain Fernando Desolmes. This vessel was wrecked on November 23, 1915 in Shelter Bay east of Portland Point BC Canada. Five crew and the ship's dog were saved, 20 of a crew and passenger list of 25 were lost. A piece of the bow and steel debris remain in the rocks at low tide. Much was salvaged in 1919. Vessel made landfall 16 miles south of Cape Beale early on morning of November 23rd. At 6.30 am they signaled Pachena in hope of picking up a tug to tow the Carelmapu through the Straits. Day spent tacking back and forth in light wind awaiting a tug. By 6.00 pm wind was hard southeast gale and sails carried away. About 1 in morning wind shifted to southwest and land was some 4 miles distant. Anchors dropped. Steamer Princess Maquinna appeared and crew began abandoning ship. Then biggest squall yet broke and ship was carried across the corner of one of the numerous reefs, bringing up on rocks about 70 yards from cliffs. Ship went over on beam ends and hull broke in two at the after hatch. Most of crew washed overboard.
