Historia

This bark (4-masted) was built in 1891 by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. in Glasgow, Scotland.

Notas históricas

This vessel was registered at Glasgow Scotland UK. On December 28, 1905 while travelling from Panama to Port Townsend WA USA this vessel was driven ashore near (1/4 mile east) Amphitrite Point on the Ucluth Peninsula with the loss of all hands (35). The British four -masted steel bark Pass of Melfort, Capt. Harry Scougall, from Ancon for Puget Sound, drove ashore on the rocks of Vancouver Island a quarter of a mile east of Amphitrite Point on the night after Christmas, and all on board were lost. The vessel was making for the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca when a southwest gale drove her to the lee shore of Vancouver Island, where this vesselsmashed into the rocks with terrific force, breaking up soon afterward. The Pass of Melfort, a 2,346-ton vessel, was built in 1891 at Glasgow for Gibson & Clark. A number of her crew were stricken with malarial fever whue this vessel was lying at Ancon, and it was believed this vessel came in short handed, with insufficient able-bodied men to handle her in the storm which this vessel encountered off the Cape. In all, this vessel carried a crew of 35, many of the bodies drifting ashore with the wreckage, being taken to Victoria by the salvage steamer Salvor, maintained at Esquimalt by Lloyd's agency and the Canadian government.
