He articled as an Architect in Victoria BC 1931-34. After his naval service in 1946 he became a partner in the firm of Birley, Wade and Stockdill in Victoria BC.
In 1952 he went into private practice, but joined Birley Simpson Wagg in 1958.

He served On Staff of Commanding Officer Pacific Coast for Duty with Extended Defence Staff 1939.
He was appointed as Lieutenant (SB) (Base Construction) (Temp.) (With seniority dated 25/09/1939).
He was appointed as A/Lieutenant-Commander (SB) (Base Construction) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 01/10/1942).
He served in HMCS Burrard.
He was appointed as Lieutenant-Commander (SB) (E) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 01/101/1944).
In 1944 he served in NSHQ. (He was demobilized.)
