He travelled with Dr. Kane on his expedition. Hall made an attempt in 1860, during a voyage of the 133t schooner United States, to reach the North Pole via the open polar sea which was then believed to exist. His approach was through Smith Sound.
He wintered at Foulke Fiord just south of Etah Greenland, the vessel was damaged and he was forced to returned in 1861. Some members of the expedition made a sledge journey up Ellesmere Island to approximately 80 degrees and 30 minutes North.
