He was a social worker and pacifist who became a Minister in the Methodist Church.
In 1917 he came to Gibson'sanding BC but his opposition to the Great War resulted in his resignation from the Church.
He moved to Vancouver as a longshoreman.
He went on to organize the Commonwealth Cooperative Federation (CCF) and was elected as a Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre in 1921.
