Anecdotes
Bill Clearihue writes that "Lucy Maud Montgomery followed her husband, Ewan MacDonald, a Presbyterian Minister, into parishes to the NE and then NW of Toronto, where she continued to write prolifically and continued to accumulate wealth and fame.
In 1933 he retired in ill health, physically and mentally, and they moved into very posh digs along the Humber River in the South Kingsway area of Toronto (Swansea).
She had 3 boys while in Ontario, the middle one was stillborn. Being in Toronto now also allowed the other boys to attend UofT, the eldest, Chester, into Law although he turned out to be a bit of a n'er-do-well. The youngest, Stuart, went into Medicine and was the antithesis of his older brother. With the War on, Stuart MacDonald applied to the Navy and he was accepted pending his graduation and Internship, which he did at St Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Its not hard to imagine Lucy Maud Montgomnery's influence in all of this, who was in this period being feted by monarchs, British and Canadian PM's, Governor-Generals, having already received an OBE from King George V. Stuart was in Toronto, when his mother died in that house in April, 1942, under cloudy circumstances. The father died the following year. Stuart then went on Active Service and was posted to the RCNH at Stadacona.
