He was the nephew of Captain Alan Stanley.
He worked with Vancouver Tugboat Co., Westminster Tugs, Kincome Navigation and Seaspan and Arctic Transportation Ltd. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner 1972.) (He was qualified as a British Columbia Coast Pilot) (He was retired.)
