He served in the T.J. Potter as a Deckhand. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner).
He served as Master of the Ocklahoma, Charles R. Spencer, Hassalo, R.R. Thompson, and the two T.J. Potters. (In 1911 he was qualified as a Marine Pilot.) He served as a Pilot on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.
