Anekdoten
By 1942 and the decline in shipping to the west coast, 10 pilots left the profession to seek work elsewhere. One was Captain Park. “Captain John Park, a former pilot, was Master on one of two freighters sunk off the coast of Florida on May 3, 1942.
He had been a first-choice pilot for the Canadian-Australian Line and is renowned for bringing the Niagara into Vancouver Harbour and to her berth in fog so thick the water could not be seen from the (ship’s) bridge.” This was a remarkable demonstration of piloting as the ship had no radar or other navigational devices." He piloted the sailing ship Pamir in 1947.
