Commander William Gard states "I met Rose Murray on her 100th birthday on 1st of August 2012 in a Calgary senior’s home. I also met Art Schievink and his wife, Gloria, relatives at that birthday celebration complete with cards, balloons and a lovely cake. Rose’s late husband, Thomas E. Lawrence, was on leave in Saskatoon when he received orders, on Remembrance Day, to report to Point Edwards Naval base in Cape Breton, NS to join HMCS Shawinigan.
He did and two weeks later he died in the sinking. His name is commemorated on the ship’s memorial. Rose and Thomas finally married in the summer of 1944 after dating a couple of years until parents permission was obtained. Rose eventually remarried to a gentleman named Murray in about 1952. I have a wonderful photo of Rose holding a photo of her late husband, homas." Wikipedia states "On 24 November 1944 Shawinigan and USCGC Sassafras escorted the ferry Burgeo from Sydney to Port aux Basques. Sassafrass was detached from the escort without relief and Shawinigan was left alone. Shawinigan departed on an independent anti-submarine patrol and informed the ferry that it would meet her in the morning. The next morning Burgeo left Port aux Basques on schedule but in the fog, could not find Shawinigan. Keeping radio silence and without informing command of Shawinigan's lack of appearance, Burgeo made for Sydney unescorted. When Burgeo arrived at Sydney at 6 PM that night, the navy knew that something had happened to Shawinigan. Over the next three days searchers looked for survivors but could only find flotsam and eventually, six bodies. Shawinigan had been torpedoed by the German submarine U-1228 during the early morning of 25 November in Cabot Strait. All hands were lost.)"
