It was established in 1937 by Oswald H. "Sparkie" New with Captain George P. Ellis.
They purchased the Hyak. Captain Ellis sold his interest to Captain and Mrs. New. Captain New acted as Master and Engineer of the Hyak until business expanded. Captain Joe Ryall joined the firm as Master and Somerled Cameron as Engineer. Arthur G. Garrish, a chartered accountant, was accountant.
