The mill was established in 1934 by Great Central Sawmills Ltd. A pulp mill was established in 1947 by Bloedel, Stewart and Welch Ltd. who purchased by the Alberni Pacific Sawmill in 1936. A plywood plant opened in 1942. The two companies merged in 1951.
