Biografía
He was the son of Andrew J. Cates and Katherine Kelly and the brother of George Emory Cates.
He went to sea in 1870 in Nova Scotia vessels. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) In 1883 he was the Master of Spratt's Ark.
In 1913 he formed C.H. Cates Towing Co. which in 1921 became C.H. Cates and Son Co. His son and partner was John Henry Cates.
