Anecdotes

In 1867 the commercial interests of the Russian American Company were sold to Hutchinson, Kohl & Company of San Francisco CA.

They merged with several other groups (including Hayward Hutchinson and Louis Sloss) to form the Alaska Commercial Company 17/09/1868. The vested the rights of the Hutchison, Kohl & Co. to undertake a seal harvest in the Pribilov Island rookeries which were obtained from the US Government in 1869.

They operated trading posts at Sitka, Kodiak, Kaluk, Nushgak, St. Paul Island, St. George Island, Unalaska, St. Michael and 41 other sites.

In 1870 they signed a 20-year lease to harvest 100,000 seals annually from the Pribiloff Islands. After the gold rush in 1922 the company was purchased by a group of employes and called the Northern Commercial Company (with its marine arm called Northern Navigation Co.).

They moved the headquarters to Seattle.

They owned a large number of vessels in Alaskan and Arctic service.
