He worked for Beaver Construction for more than 15 years in Montreal and moved to Halifax in 1972, as senior vice-president in charge of the Maritimes.
He changed careers in Halifax, joining consulting engineers Whitman Benn and Associates and worked many years, retiring as Senior VP.
He retired in 1998 and created Innovative Marine Structures Incorporated (IMSI). Through IMSI, John became an inventor and held patents on ocean reef manufacturing equipment and reef making processes.

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 02/01/1954).
He served in HMCS Donnacona for UNTD 1953-1958.
He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R). (He was released.)
