In 1886-1890 he served in the Earl of Aberdeen (4-masted bark) as an Apprentice.
In 1890 he served in the Orion (bark) as Second Mate.
In 1892 he joined the S.S. Silvertown as Third Officer.
In 1894 he served in the S.S. Omba as Second Mate.
In 1895 he served in the S.S. Dacia as First Officer.
In 1903 he served as Master of the Dacia (cable ship).
He served as Master of the Buccaneer (cable ship).
In 1905 he was appointed as the Master of the Restorer (cable ship).
He was retired in 1923.
