Anekdoten

Popularly known as the IWA, an affiliate of the CIO. The Lumber Workers Industrial Union became District 1. It was formed in 1937 as part of a unionization drive by the Committee for Industrial Organization (later the Congress of Industrial Organizations). In British columbia it absorbed the Lumber Workers Industrial Union. A strike and organizing drive in 1946 made it the largest union in western Canada.

In 1948 the communist leadership was replaced by a CCF-NDP oriented tradition. Until 1986 the IWA Canadian membership was divided at the MB-ON border as Western and Eastern Regions.

In 1986 they were united under Jack Munro.

By 1994, the remainder of the U.S.-based IWA had just over 20,000 members. The IWA leadership felt the union was no longer viable on its own, and the IWA merged with the International Association of Machinists (IAM) on May 1, 1994.
