Anekdoten
He was the father of Captain (N) Judith Harper. Captain Judith Harper states "Served in RCNR or RCNVR beginning a day or two before WW II was declared. Oral family history was that he was serving in a fisheries patrol vessell and the whole crew formed up on the jetty in Victoria to march down to the Navy Recruiting Office as their vessel was about to be transferred to the navy for the duration. We were living in Victoria when he was offered a commission, in the RCN, in 1951 or 1952, which he accepted. We moved to Sorel, QC where he served under Thomas Maxwell (Commodore at the end of his service in the 1970's) in the ship's shore office during the construction of Labrador.
He was appointed to the ship's crew as she made the voyage to Halifax which became her home port, and in 1954 Dad was part of the Engine Room Crew again serving under Tom Maxwell as Labrador made the historic voyage from Halifax to Esquimalt through the North-West Passage, and back to Halifax via the Panama Canal, arriving in mid-November. My second brother was born on 1 Dec 1954 and Dad was at home for the occasion. We lived in Dartmouth until 1964 and in that time, Dad served ashore but also for two or three years in H.M.C.S. Crusader. I don't know the exact date but the fourth child in our family was born in 1957 and christened in Crusader, as attested to by the inscription of her name on the ship's bell. After Crusader, he served in the engineering facility in the Dockyard, then in the rank of LCdr he served in Ottawa at NHQ on the Staff of the Chief of Logistics Engineering and Development.
He retired in Ottawa on his 50th birthday, 23 Mar 1968."
