(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) In 1986-86 he was the Master of the Arctic Helios, a Canadian icebreaking tug & supply vessel, in a partial east to west transit of the North West Passage via Lancaster Sound, Victoria Strait to Tuktoyaktuk.
He completed the Passage to Vancouver the following year.
