He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for Vancouver - Kensington in 1991.
He was appointed as the Attorney General and Minister responsible for Muticulturalism, Human Rights and Immigration in 1995.
He was elected as Laeader of the NDP in 2000, becoming Premier of British Columbia.
He lost the General Election of 2001.
