Story

This tug was built in 1919 by Bethlehem Ship Building Corp. in Elizabethport, NJ.

Historical Notes

On November 16, 1948 this tug was struck by the steamship Herald of the Morning while manoevering to get a line to her nine miles off the mouth of the Columbia River. The freighter was to have been towed to Puget Sound but the rough seas had caused the steamship break her towline to the Sea Fox. The Neptune was attempting to retrieve the towline when the collision ruptured her hull and this vessel sank rapidly. The USCGC Balsam picked up her crew one of whom died later.
