Story

This littoral combat ship (lcs) (independence-class) was built in 2018 by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama.

Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 27/04/2023) stated "Although they're building more, the Navy has declared they don't have use for the number of LCS's they presently have in service. I was surprised to learn that the Navy has never experimented with moving a mission module from one LCS to another. The present mindset is that the LCS 1 (FREEDOM) class from Marinette will grow to be exclusively surface combatant vessels, the LCS 2 (INDEPENDENCE or even-number) class will be exclusively mine countermeasures vessels. The anti-submarine mission will be eliminated because new frigates will be delivered from Marinette. Other expected missions, like Electronic Warfare and Amphibious Support, have never materialized."
