This tanker was built in 1945 by Florida Shipbuilding in Ojus, FL.

Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 01/10/2022) states "A rare surplus vessel is the Army Y-type tanker CAPE GREIG (654947). As often happens, the Army-built vessels are more desirable for conversion than Navy, and compared to the Navy YO/YOG/YW series, these were twin screw while the Navy units were single. Although over 100 of the Army Y's were built, very few were ever documented as U. S. merchant ships. That's because most of them were at overseas bases, and were sold locally. Y66 indeed worked in Vietnam, but then returned to the U. S. This vessel was sold and documented in 1982 as NEW WEST, and her open spaces filled in over the years until only the basic hull remained as evidence of her origins. This vessel became CAPE GREIG in 2010. "
