Kyle Stubbs (Email to Nauticapedia 13/12/2021) stated "Named CAYUSE, her appearance was that of a 1960s or 1970s-built crab boat, but this vesse also wore a fairly fresh ON on the superstructure, 1278004. I eventually figured out her origin story by thinking back to a vessel I'd seen during one of my first visits to Newport about 10 years ago, at the time named ARGO MAINE. This vessel had originally been built by Albina in 1968 as the CAYUSE as an NSF survey vessel for OSU, then changed hands among institutions and eventually made her way to the east coast where the later name came into play. Apparently, someone with a sense of history caught wind that this vessel was for sale and chose to bring her home and restore her name for commercial service."
