Story

This cruiser was built in 1987 by Ingalls Shipbuilding Co. in Pascagoula, MS.

Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 07/12/2021) stated "USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57) obviously putting on a show, manning the rails in whites and with her battle ensign streaming. This class is on its way out, with some half of the units already decommissioned, and no direct replacement being built. In fact, the only effective surface combatants presently being built are the ARLEIGH BURKE guided missile destroyers. At least in my day, the distinction between designations was that the cruisers were designed for offensive attacks on air targets, the destroyers on surface targets, and the DE's (later frigates) on submarine targets. Maybe modern weaponry has blurred the lines between anti-air and anti-surface targets." On May 9, 2017 this vessel collided with a South Korean fishing vessel.
