Notas históricas

Bruce Mackay, son of owner Gordon Mackay, quotes from his father's journal. "Gordon Mackay sailed her from Vancouver to Comox during July 1971 and from there to Holberg two weeks later. The trip from Comox, through the Inside Passage and around Cape Scott to Quatsino and Holberg Inlets was made without incident in good weather. Tempest II was used for recreational fishing and Mackay family outings in the summer of 1971 while berthed in Holberg. The winter of 71/72 was unusually cold and ice damaged the vessel in her mooring on her starboard side.

She was promptly patched and refloated when ice conditions permitted, but she had been under water to her deck for days. Temporary repairs and cleanout made her fit to sail and restored her engine and systems to operation, however the water damage to the interior necessitated more extensive repairs than could be conducted afloat.

She was sailed from Holberg to Comox then Victoria and removed from the water for a major refit. The refit was conducted by the owners at their home in Saanich. The vessel was stripped to the bare hull aft of the galley and totally rebuilt. The canvas cover for the aft of the vessel had been previously found inadequate for all but the calmest weather and was discarded. It was replaced by a hard-top of the same lines and construction as the rest of the vessel. The engine at the time was a 534 cubic inch Ford Industrial Marine. The temporary repair had restored it to seemingly reliable operation, however since it had been under water it was removed from the vessel and sent to the Industrial Marine plant in Vancouver for rebuild. On review and examination of the engine combined with only 2200 hours on it, the plant was reluctant to conduct a full rebuild and instead just refaced the exhaust ports, valves, rebuilt alternator, starter, governor, and carburetor. A new flame arrestor was installed. ... refit details from here are extensive, covering hydraulics, velvet (transmission) drive, hull, upper cabin and hard top, wiring, pumps, instrumentation, batteries, stove, furnace, icebox, electrolysis, sound proofing, fire protection, lights, dinghy, head, fuel tanks ..."
