This vessel was built in 1965 by Nor'Wester Boats at Marysville, Washington (MVUS says hull #38), and delivered as the SUNRISE (with half a dozen names since). Despite having done some research in the past on the Northwest's early players in the fiberglass boat business, I still didn't know much about Nor'Wester Boats. I've only photographed 3 boats that list Nor'Wester as the builder, and KINGFISH is the earliest, so I can't say if this vessel had 37 predecessors, or if the hull ID is "code" for something else. After a bit of digging, the most I've found about the company is an anecdote from MotorBoating magazine's November 1965 issue that states "Nor-Wester Boat Co of Marysville, Wash, has built what is believed to be the nation's biggest fiberglass vessel, 53' 1" loa; 18' beam, 1' draft - anyone know of one bigger?" Given MVUS shows SUNRISE/KINGFISH with registered dimensions of 48.8' x 18.1, and this vessel was built in 1965, the numbers are close enough that this very well could be the subject of those superlatives."
