Historical Notes

George Schneider (Email to Nauticapedia 12/12/2025) stated "At the South end of the bay was the car carrier I'd seen arrive the evening before, GLOVIS SUNLIGHT (IMO 9798416) at the 24th Street terminal in National City. Since you all know what a floating shoebox looks like, I decided to include this shot because you might not all know what a stack-sucker looks like. That's my own colloquial name for a barge that catches the exhaust from a ship that needs to use its own engines in port. It might sound like easy money, but if you heard about the containers cascading off a ship in Long Beach a couple months ago, you might not have heard that some of them landed on and ruined the stack-sucking barge that was hooked up to her. I haven't been able to identify the barge in this photo, but many of the Southern California barges doing this work are owned by Stax Engineering of Santa Barbara, CA, who currently operate 8 of them. The first five were built on Navy surplus barges, the last three are new barges built in China."
