Militärdienst
He was an Alferez de Navio (Sub-Lieutenant) in the Spanish Navy.
He served as second pilot in the schooner Sonora of the squadron led by Quadra on his voyage of HMCS Discovery on the BC coast in 1775.
He also participated in an expedition in 1779 from San Blas under the overall command of Ignacio Arteaga sailing with Quadra in the Favorita. After this voyage he published several charts of the coast with sailing directions.
