Biografía

He was known as the "father of American anthropology." During the winter of 1883-4 he lived among the Inuit of Baffin Island for twelve months.

He left the Arctic in September 1884.

He was associated with the Berlin University and the Berlin Museum of Ethnology. At the museum he catalogued British Columbia artifacts collected by J.A. Jacobsen. Boas spent a lot of time with nine Bella Coola natives brought to Germany by J.A. Jaconsen, gradually learning their language.

In 1886 he visited British Columbia on a research trip, starting in Victoria and departing for Nahwitti. On this trip he collected 100 legends and studied the ethnology of southwestern BC.

He returned to BC in 1888 supported by the Northwestern Tribes Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

In 1894 he spent his longest period among the Kwakiutl of Fort Rupert who bestowed on him the name of Heiltsakuls "the one who does not speak." He revisited Fort Rupert in 1930.
