In 1905 the family moved to Rat Portage Ont. (now Kenora) on the Lake of the Woods where his Great Grandfather and father established a boat yard where he and his five brothers learned the boat building trade. In about 1913 the boat yard was moved to Portage Bay, Keewatin just a few miles west.
