He was appointed as a Leading Seaman (RCN).
In 1965 he served in HMCS Athabaskan. (He was released.)
He was awarded the Chief of the Naval Staff Commendation for his part in rescuing 35 survivors from the sinking tanker Amphialos while serving in HMCS Athabaskan.
