He went to sea in Sweden.
In 1882 he arrived on the Pacific coast in the steam vessel Santa Rosa.
He was qualified as an Engineer (MM).
In 1882-84 he went to the Artic on a whaling expedition.
In 1884-87 he joined the steam vessel City of Puebla as First Assistant Engineer.
He was qualified as a Chief Engineer (MM).
He served as Chief Engineer in the Caspar. After a few months he left to work with the Merchants' Cold Storage Company.
