Ommundsen, Ommund B.

Biografie

He was the eldest son of a shipmaster, Peder Ommundsen, and his wife Johanne, who had three sons and two daughters. The family spent summer months at a farm on the Island of Finnøy, where Ommund gained experience in farming and seamanship.

He graduated from the Stavanger Business College in 1924, and in 1926 traveled to Norfolk, Virginia aboard the S.S. Key West.

He then traveled aboard the turbine steamer Alaska (built in Vancouver 1918), under the command of his father, through the Panama Canal, arriving in Vancouver on April 25, 1926.

He was President and Managing Director of the Vancouver ship chandlery H.A. Borgerson Ltd. According to The Marine Digest, June 7, 1952, page 19, “Ommundsen was known to ship owners the world over. He, working with Borgerson, has been instrumental in building the chandlery to the largest firm of its kind in Vancouver and one of the largest in all Canada. The company occupied a seven story warehouse in the heart of Vancouver’s waterfront at 41 Alexander Street. It is equipped with modern facilities for the handling of ship’s stores of every description including refrigeration plants for fruit, vegetables, fish and meat products. H.A. Borgerson Ltd. carried a complete stock of engine room and galley stores.”
