Turner, Matthew

伝記

(He was qualified as a Master Mariner).

In 1898 he was a ship builder with a yard in Benicia CA.

He is reputed to have built more sailing vessels than any other yard in the USA. (Vessels built: Amaranth; Ariel; Benicia; Emma Claudina; Galilee; Geneva; Monarch (1898); Equator; Karluk; Lurline; Nautilus; Papeete; Solano; W.H. Diomond; William G. Irwin) He employed the "Turner Model" of sailing rig using a Bermuda sail, a fore-and-aft sail without a gaff, bearing a large triangular sail. Eliminating the gaff made it easier to bring the sail down during sudden Pacific squalls.
