He was appointed as an Able-Seaman RCNVR. (On 16/04/1945 he was missing presumed killed while serving in HMCS Esquimalt (under command of Lieutenant Robert Cunningham MacMillan, DSC and Bar, RCNVR) when she was was torpedoed and sunk on 16 April 1945 by U-190, five miles off Chebucto Head, near Halifax, Canada in position 44º28'N, 63º10'W. 44 of the crew were lost with the ship and 26 of the crew survived the sinking.)
