He graduated as a Civil Engineer from the University of Manitoba in 1961 and as a recipient of a two year Commonwealth Scholarship went on to graduate with a PhD in Structural Engineering from Southampton University in 1965. Within his 31 year career at the University of Manitoba, he had been Professor of Civil Engineering, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and Provost of University College.
He served as Head - Department of Civil Engineering - University of Manitoba and Provost - University College - University of Manitoba and Chair - Department of National Defence Research Grants Committee.
He served as Chairman - Manitoba Environmental Council

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (E) (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 02/01/1958).
He served in HMCS Chippawa for UNTD 1957-1958.
