He joined the sealing trade in the Kate and Anna in 1886.
In 1888 he served in coasting trade in the George H. Chance for one year.
He then served in the Penelope.
In 1891 ansd 1892 he served in the schooner Geneva.
In 1893 he was master of the schooner Louis Olsen (ex-Dolphin).
He reached Victoria in late 1894 with the Olsen having sealed on the Japan coast.
