Servicio militar
He was appointed as a Captain in the US Coast Guard.
He commanded the USCGC Polar Star during her 1988 west to east transit of the Northwest Passage.
He continued on to circumnavigate North America.
He retired as a Captain and after retirement he worked as an advisor to the National Science Foundation as an observer on voyages to the Antarctic.
