He was an Alaskan Arctic trader.
In 1913 he purchased the schooner C.S. Holmes.
In 1922 Roald Amundsen chartered the C.S. Holmes for an Arctic expedition.
He became ill in 1928 and relinquished control of the Midnight Sun Trading Co. to his son Captain John Backland (Jr.).
